VoteSmart Receives Provincial Award

For Release May 4, 2006

LONDON: VoteSmart, the municipal election awareness program initiated by the three Chambers of Commerce in the City of Kawartha Lakes last fall, has garnered provincial recognition.

VoteSmart was one of two initiatives from local chambers of commerce in Ontario to receive an Advocacy Award at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting in London on the weekend.

“VoteSmart successfully tackled one of the most imperative municipal issues – good governance – and gave the business community a strong, united voice,” explains Len Crispino, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

VoteSmart is an initiative of the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce, Bobcaygeon & Area Chamber of Commerce and Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce.

“By raising awareness of the factors vital for economic development, both with the public and the candidates” added Crispino, “the chambers helped focus the campaign on issues paramount for the community’s development.”

Following are some of the reasons VoteSmart was chosen for the Advocacy Award:

• VoteSmart raised the profile of key public policy priorities
• VoteSmart strengthened the voice of the business community
• VoteSmart consisted of a partnership with 3 chambers
• VoteSmart was sustained over a period of time and is still continuing
• VoteSmart provides value to business and the residential community

Val Harris, President of the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce and Evelyn Chambers, General Manager, were on hand to receive the awards on behalf of all three chambers.
