An Evening Like No Other – Evening of Excellence Winners Announced

Lindsay: On Friday March 28th an evening like no other took place at the Academy Theatre in Lindsay where the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce hosted the Evening of Excellence. This year’s event was different, exciting, dynamic and included an awards ceremony where 8 businesses and individuals were recognized for achievements in our community.
About 200 people gathered to celebrate excellence in our community. Fine cuisine, spectacular silent auction items and prizes, as well as musical entertainment provided the setting for this event, including an awards presentation with video profiles of the finalists. The award winners in each category are:
Jeremy Plaunt of Water Depot was named the Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Jeremy’s nomination referred to the success of his business, his outstanding philosophy relating to product innovation and his generous support of many community events and organizations.
The Entrepreneurial Excellence Award was given to Lindsay Dance Studio, owned by Stephanie Mackey. Entrepreneurial spirit, student involvement and business success and expansion were the key factors identified in the nomination.
DeNure Tours was recognized in the Customer Experience Award category in recognition of the company’s customer-experience focus and their employee recognition initiatives. Mason Homes earned the honour of Friend of Youth for its commitment to the cooperative education program it has been involved with through LCVI, and Trillium Lakelands District Schoolboard.
NP Media Business Solutions, operated by Mike Castell, received the Eco Star Award for their involvement in environmental responsible office products and solutions.
Common Grounds Coffee House owned and operated by Jake and Julie Norris received the Design Award in recognition of the innovative service and contemporary renovations of the building at the corner of Cambridge Street and Kent Street in Lindsay.
The top business award category of the year, Business Leader of the Year was awarded to Marlene Morrison Nicholls. This award acknowledges both business and volunteer excellence. As Vice President of Stewart Morrison Insurance Brokers Ltd., Marlene was recognized for the expansion of the business in our area, her involvement in community programs and initiatives and her tremendous support and leadership to the community.
The Citizen of the Year was bestowed upon Paul McPherson. Paul was recognized for the many contributions he has made over the years to many community organizations. His involvement in organizations such as Canadian Cancer Society, Kinsmen Annual Toy Drive, Ross Memorial Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes Haliburton, Big Bike for Heart and Stroke, Alzheimer Society of Kawartha Lakes reflects his commitment to his community.
Several volunteer judges were coordinated to sift through a record number of nominations in preparation for this year’s awards. The finalists in each category were also recognized during the event in video profiles. The Academy Theatre is the charity partner for the 2008 Evening of Excellence and a formal donation will be made in the weeks to come.
